IELTS Writing Task 2, 6.5

Task 2
|---|---|
| 채점 | Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
|---|---|---|---|
| Task Response |
| Coherence and Cohesion |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy |
시험에 자주 나오는 "Discuss both views and give your own opinion" 유형입니다.
Some people believe that university education should be free for everyone. Others think students should pay for their own studies. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
"give your own opinion"을 놓치는 답안이 가장 많습니다.
Nowadays, education is very important in modern society. Some people think university should be free, but other people think students should pay. This essay will discuss both views and give my opinion.
Whether university should be free is a question many governments now face as tuition costs climb. Some argue that higher education is a public good the state should fund, while others believe that the people who benefit from a degree should pay for it. In my view, tuition should be free for students from low- and middle-income families, but not for everyone.
Firstly, free university is good for society. Because many people can study. Moreover, it is good for poor students. Furthermore, the country can develop. For example, in Germany university is free and Germany is a developed country.
Those who support free tuition point out that a degree benefits society as a whole, not only the graduate. A country with more nurses, engineers and teachers is healthier and more productive, and the taxes these graduates later pay can exceed what their education cost. Free tuition also removes a barrier that keeps talented students from poorer families out of university altogether, so places go to ability rather than to family income.
- "Because many people can study."

Many argue that plastic use should be cut, since most of it is thrown away after a single use.
Lexical Resource
|---|---|---|
| 교육 | widen access to, tuition fees | Free tuition widens access to higher education. |
| 환경 | cut emissions, place a burden on | Car use places a heavy burden on city air quality. |
| 기술 | raise concerns about, screen time | Long screen time raises concerns about children's sleep. |
| 사회 | public spending, in the long run | Prevention saves public spending in the long run. |
| 일 | work-life balance, job security | Remote work can improve work-life balance. |
Some people believe that university education should be free for everyone. Others think students should pay for their own studies. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Whether university should be free is a question many governments now face as tuition costs climb. Some argue that higher education is a public good the state should fund, while others believe that the people who benefit from a degree should pay for it. In my view, tuition should be free for students from low- and middle-income families, but not for everyone.
On the other hand, there are strong reasons to ask students to contribute. Graduates generally earn more over their careers than non-graduates, so it seems fair that they, rather than every taxpayer, should cover part of the cost. Making university entirely free can also strain public budgets, which may lead to larger classes and fewer resources, lowering the quality of the very education being offered. Students who pay something towards their course may also take it more seriously, since they have invested in the outcome themselves.
In conclusion, both positions have merit, but neither works well on its own. Funding tuition for students who could not otherwise afford it keeps university open to talent, while asking higher-income families to pay protects the quality that makes a degree worth having. A system that combines the two is therefore fairer than either extreme.
